What is the Year 2000 problem?

Many of the world’s computer systems record year as two digits in order to save computer space. For example, 1999 is stored as 99. During the year 2000, noncompliant computers would have 00 instead of 2000; hence some computer software programs may not distinguish the difference between 1900 and 2000. Being ready for Y2K means that the computer can “understand” this date change.
